ALPHONSUS
LIGUORI
Alphonsus
was a lawyer. After losing a court case due to an oversight, he left his
practice and became a priest. He organized the Congregation of the Most Holy
Redeemer (Redemptorist) to conduct missions to rural districts. He was a
theologian and a popular writer on many subjects. He raised his voice
against the puritanical Jansenist heresy but also had to contend with
political conflicts over the control of the Redemptorist order. He is a
Doctor of the Church.
