VIGNETTES ON SAINTS



 

 

ST. BASIL

 

St. Basil's grandmother, Macrina, his parents, Basil the Elder and Emmelia, his brother, Gregory of Nyssa, and sister, Macrina, were all saints.

 

He was an assiduous scholar and taught rhetoric. Attracted to the eremetical life, he traveled across the east, the seat of monasticism, and returned home to found his own community.

 

Basil became bishop at the height of the Arian heresy and persecution. He combined fearless and forceful defense of the faith with indefatigable pastoral zeal.
