GOD IS THE SOURCE OF LOVE

God wants us to love Him above all things before we can love our neighbor.  When we love God first, our love for our neighbors becomes Divine Love or Charity and not merely human love. 

Since God is the source of love, no love outside of God can survive except as a parody of love, an imitation.  They, therefore, who separate themselves from God, imitate the love of God perversely, claiming they have love when, in truth, they do not have it.  In fact, they put themselves against God in their pretense.   

Souls were created by God to reflect the perfect image of God's love.  As soon as sin enters the picture, the souls become deprived of love and simply pretend to be the source of love.  The sinner pretends he can love others apart from God. This is impossible because God is love and anyone not united with God cannot, indeed, love.
