THE CHURCH

NATIONALISM IS CONTRARY TO THE CHURCH SPIRIT

It is so important that the Church should be one.  And this was proven in the case of Europe; she was united into one great nation as long as she was Catholic, then known as the Holy Roman Empire.  That was the time man was most satisfied, secure and happy.

Then the Spaniards became Spaniards, the Germans, German, and the French became French.  That was the beginning of the destruction of the Church.  The tragedy was that the Catholic church, herself, became nationalistic.  Before, there was only the Pope.  Then, suddenly, there was a French Pope, a German Pope, an Italian Pope.  There was even a Vatican in Rome and a Vatican in Avignon, France.  Today, we even have an African Church and an Asian Church. Though some unity has been preserved, local churches took national colors with different social habits.  The lack of unity had weakened the church.  The Church cannot function in such a weakened position.

Unity is the most important characteristic of the Catholic Church.  Remove unity and all evil would rush in.  The tragedy is that unity was taken for granted; the Church woke up filled with evil that she could hardly manage.  She discovered the importance of unity at a time there was nothing she could do about the disunity.
