ACTS OF CHARITY

All men have the same human flesh whether one is of the nobility or a peasant. When we perform an act of charity, in which we use our excess wealth to help someone with too little, we are acknowledging our unity with others.

The hunger of the poor must pain the rich. And the pain of the rich is alleviated by assuaging the hunger of the poor. Thus, an act of charity benefits both the giver and the receiver.

An Act of Charity is an act by which man recognizes his unity with his neighbor.

St. John Chrysostom
