VIGNETTES ON SAINTS
AMBROSE
Ambrose was the son of a
praetorian perfect of Gaul. He was appointed governor of the Milan district
by Emperor Valentinian. He was not yet a baptized Christian when he went to
Milan Cathedral to settle a dispute between the Arian heretics and the
Catholics. While doing so, he found himself unanimously elected bishop by
the warring factions.
Ambrose became a fierce defender of the independence of the church against
secular authority and a great builder of Christianity within the Roman
Empire. He baptized his successor, the great St. Augustine.
Ambrose is one of the four great Latin Fathers of the Church, with
Augustine, Jerome and Gregory the Great.
