ST.
PULCHERIA
She was the
sister of Theodosius II and was Regent of the Empire during the minority age
of Theodosius. She married Marcian and, together with him, helped the cause
of orthodoxy by supporting Pope St. Leo. They also opposed the Monophysite
heresy by convoking the Council of Chalcedon.
She became
the Empress of the Eastern Roman Empire. It is said that she made a vow of
virginity at an early age and persuaded her sister to do the same. She
eventually turned the imperial palace into a monastery. She built churches
-- three in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She also
established hospitals, orphanages, houses for the aged and strangers.
