VIGNETTES ON SAINTS

ST. ARTHELAIS (560 a.d.)

Arthelais was the lovely daughter of the Pro-Consul. When she reached marriageable age, the emperor, hearing of her great beauty, asked her father to give the girl to him as a concubine.

With the help of her father, Arthelais fled with servants to Dalmatia. There they were attacked by robbers, but Arthelais was released miraculously.

They continued their journey to Benevenuto to the home of her uncle.  Arthelais, on arrival, made an act of thanksgiving by walking barefoot to the Church of Our Lady. After her victorious escape, she devoted herself to prayer and fasting. She died of fever at the age of sixteen.
