CONSTITUTION OF
THE HOLY APOSTLES
(A 2nd century
compilation of the teachings of the 12 Apostles)
THE ADORNMENTS OF
SELF AND THE SIN WHICH ARISES FROM IT (FOR MEN)
Let the husband not be
insolent nor arrogant towards his wife but compassionate, bountiful,
willing to please his own wife alone, and treat her honourably and
obligingly, endeavoring to be agreeable to her.
Do not do anything in
adornment, words or action as may entice another woman to
thee. If she comes to you and you sin with her, you deserve
eternal death. If she comes to you but you shake her off or
refuse her, you are not guilty of adultery but you are still guilty
in that you enticed her to commit adultery in her mind. Your
carelessness had caused her to lust after you. You are guilty
of her transgression "and shall inherit a woe." Do
not commit sin to please men; instead attain holiness of life to
please God.
