CONSTITUTION OF
THE HOLY APOSTLES
(A 2nd century
compilation of the teachings of the 12 Apostles)
COVETOUSNESS
Abstain from unlawful
desires. It is written: "Thou shalt not desire thy
neighbor's wife, nor his field, nor his servants, nor his ox; for
coveting of these things is from the evil one. If you covet
your neighbor's wife you are an adulterer in mind; if you covet his
things you are a thief. If you do not repent, you shall be
condemned.
To those
obedient to God, obey one law, simple, true and living, which is
this: "Do not do to another which thou hatest another
should do to thee." You would not want any one to look
upon your wife with an evil design to corrupt her; do not
thou, therefore, look upon they neighbor's wife with a wicked
intention. You would not wish your property should be taken
away; do not take away another's. You do not wish to be
accused falsely, lied about, affronted, do not treat any other in
like manner.
