ON SUFFERING

CHRISTIAN TEARS ARE NOT SORROWFUL

When we speak of Christian tears, think not of sorrow. The tears the saints speak about bring more joy than all the laughter the world can bring about.

Thus, the Apostles, after being beaten with rods by order of the Sanhedrin, were filled with joy. The rods caused pain, not pleasure. They caused tears. The pain of the beatings, like all tearful experiences undergone for Christ, becomes springs of joy.

Yes, the way is narrow; but the pain and tears and suffering it brings is sweet.
