REBUKE, REPROVE, EXHORT

When we are rebuked or corrected, we must not become angry, for we are all human and have faults. Those who rebuke or correct, on the other hand, must not make a scene but do so privately and with gentleness. . .to persuade them to bear the correction. Surgeons are most gentle when they have to cut or cauterize. Those who rebuke must act even with greater gentleness. . .for rebukes are sharper than knives. They make people react.

Carelessly done, rebukes will make the rebuked run away. Be gentle, look only at the health of the patient and our rebukes will be effective. Bear the burden of your brother's faults patiently. . .in this way you shall fulfill the law of Christ. By both rebuking and bearing the faults of others we shall be able to edify one another.

John Chrysostom
