A monk went to Scete to visit the holy hermit, John. When John saw the visitors, he greeted them and then turned away to continue his work.

The visiting monk asked: "How come John has not shown us more hospitality?"

John replied: "A sinner repentant for his sins has no time for these things."

And Abbot Theodore added: "You speak the truth, John. For God does not require this command of a man who is in supplication for the forgiveness of his sins."
