ST.
AUGUSTINE ON THE ANTI-CHRIST
St.
Augustine states that the anti-Christ is an individual. The events
surrounding the anti-Christ terrified Daniel and gave him a headache.
Augustine adds that, even if you are half-asleep, you will be fully
awake when you see the fierce attack on the Church planned by the
anti-Christ.
"The
mystery of iniquity is already at work..." i.e. the wicked and
the hypocrites who remain within the Church. When these traitors have
reached a number so great as to shake the foundation of the Church, this
large number of subversives working within the Church to destroy her is the
"mystery of iniquity at work."
So
Augustine encourages Christians to be strong until the subversives within
the Church are revealed and identified, taken away and spewed out of the
bosom of the Church: "They went out from us but they were not of
us." Unmasked, they will now join the anti-Christ.
