ON POPES, BISHOPS
& RELIGIOUS SUPERIORS
THE HOLY
FATHER IS OUR LEADER IN THE FAITH
If there is anything that
non-Catholic Christians admire in the Catholic Church, it is her unity under
one uncompromising leadership. All Christian sects have dwindled into
thousands of smaller sects, each one farther from the original due to the
lack of one head founded on an unchangeable rock. But most Catholic
priests, and bishops for that matter, are not united nor are they following
the leadership of the Holy Father. Everyone seems to be going his own
sweet way to I-don't-know-where. We do not appreciate that which other
sects admire in the Catholic Church.
Pope Benedict wrote a book entitled, "Ratzinger
Report", describing the state of the Church, describing what is wrong with
the Church, with bishops and priests. The solution to the crises in
the Church is in the same report and nobody is reading it. We are
fortunate that he has a greater pulpit wherewith he can shout what he
already knows. But are we listening? I am, in fact, amazed at
the almost lack of interest of Hierarchical authorities at the election of
Pope Benedict XVI. In fact, the secular press gave more in-depth
reflections at his election. The few priests who wrote about it
were shallow and critical. . . critical in that they thought that it is they
who must give suggestions to the Pope rather than the Pope giving them
orders. In his humility, asked what was his agenda, Pope Benedict
answered, I will have to wait for God's will. That is not the answer of a
Pope. It is the answer of a saint.
