THE PRAYING MONK

The truly obedient monk often becomes suddenly radiant and exultant during his prayers.

Everyone can pray in a group. For some it is a good thing to pray with someone who wishes to pray. But solitary prayer is only for the very few.

When praying with others it may be impossible to pray with wordless prayer of the spirit. But try to meditate on the words of the hymn or reading. You must not do any other task during the time of prayer.

Just as furnace tests gold, prayer tests the zeal of a monk and his love for God.

John Climacus
