DIALOGUES

Answers of the Great Masters of the Spiritual Life to the Questions of Their Disciples.

Disciple: Who is the true man?

Master:  He who has understood that his body is corruptible and short-lived and that he has a soul that is immortal that is joined to the body to be tested..

Disciple: And if a man rightly understands this. . .

Master:  He will lead a life pleasing to God, not trusting nor indulging his body.

Disciple: What is reason for?

Master:  That man may look at the world and all things in it and through them apprehend Him who has created all for his sake.

Disciple: When is reason distorted?

Master:  When man through unrighteousness does not understand the purpose of God's creation and, as a consequence, disbelieves God and embraces what is contrary to truth.

Disciple: What is possible and impossible to man?

Master:  To avoid death is impossible to man. To be united to God is possible.

Disciple: How is union with God attained?

Master:  Through faith testified by a good life.
